Overview

Mission Statement

The Planning Board's role in development is to review and approve the subdivision of land, site plans (for businesses), certain special permits, and the removal or alteration of trees and stone walls within the Town right-of-way along designated Scenic Roads. It is also responsible for drafting and maintaining a master plan.

The Planning Board is governed by local, state, and federal statutes regulating the development of land. It therefore must ensure that each project meets the spirit and intent of the local Zoning By-laws (available for sale in the Selectmen's Office and online and the Rules and Regulations of the Sherborn Planning Board (available for sale in the Planning Board office), as well as state and federal law, and the town's General Plan. As previously mentioned, the Planning Board strongly recommends pre-submission review for guidance on any project that you may want to develop in Sherborn. There is no fee for this service nor is there a limit on how many times you may appear before the Board for such pre-submission reviews. The Board also recommends meeting with the Town Planner and/or reviewing the Permitting Procedures Manual prior to beginning a project.

The Sherborn Planning Board consists of five members and an Associate Member. The members are elected to staggered three-year terms. The Associate Member is appointed by the Moderator for a 2-year term. The Associate Member participates in Special Permit decisions in the absence of a regular member.
