Rescue

The SFRD is charged with rescuing persons from potentially life-threatening situations and other circumstances. The main types of rescues that the SFRD participates in are listed below.

Vehicle Extrication

Through the use of a wide variety of tools and equipment, we respond to motor vehicle accidents involving people trapped in their vehicles. We work to free accident victims from their vehicles in order for them to be transported the appropriate medical facility.

Water/Ice Rescue

Using specialized equipment that is dispersed through all of our structural firefighting apparatus and ambulance, we respond to water and ice rescues. Our members are trained to rescue victims from lakes and ponds, and slow-moving river currents. We partner with the MA Fire District 14 Dive Team and other mutual aid partners to provide these services.

Animal

The department rescues several animals per year. These typically include dogs, cats and horses. Our members are specially trained and equipped to handle emergencies involving horses, and we are one of the few fire departments in the region able to do so.
